The story of the Bell Aircraft Corporation’s contribution to the success of rotary wing aircraft began with the development of the small model 30 by Chief Designer Arthur Young. The company developed two examples in late 1942 and 1943 and tested them throughout the next year. This film shows both serial number one that had an open cockpit and landing gear with fixed wheels and the number 2 that had a bubble-type canopy and caster wheels. This rare film begins with Arthur Young experimenting with several remotely controlled helicopter models. Young tests the models outside the workshop that Lawrence Bell had set up for the purpose in Gardenville, New York. Young is seen with several variations including one with his patented stabilizing device. Testing is then seen on the first machine with hovering, side-to-side and forward and backward flight demonstrated. The second machine is then tested in the Catskill Mountains of western New York. With fantastic scenery, this machine demonstrates its ability to get into and out of tight places as well as its agility and maneuverability. This film is B&W with captions, music and some explanatory narration added. This film is a must for the early helicopter enthusiast or historian.
